I begin to realise how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. He taught me that if you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good. Hot is no good, either. White hot and passionate is the only thing to be.

a City Girl in the Texas Hill Country: month 4

*

There’s alot of music here, I go to a show almost every week. And there are all manner of festivals; the Revival Rockabilly Fest, Chaos in Tejas, the Old Settlers festival.  A few weeks ago, I attended the Austin Psych Fest, and oh, was it fun. The venue was an abandoned power plant, which was back lit, and had rad psychedelic projections inside. The bands were all great, there was a selection of quality vintage sold by some of the raddest ladies in the city, and super yummy food.  Oh yeah, and abundant numbers of good looking dudes rocking out.

Speaking of the food scene, all over town there are open air food courts where trailers serving various types of food, congregate.  Picnic benches are centrally located within these compounds for you to relax and experience some of the best cheap food in the country. One can be served a duck egg cracked over juicy pork belly garnished with dandelion greens,  in a paper basket, of course. Or one can order more standard fare, like tacos. Many of these food carts are attached to awesome bars like Liberty Bar, whose EAST SIDE KING trailer was featured on Anthony Bourdain’s TV show.

Sad Cat News: My long time cat Selassie died in my arms. He was 19 years old and the sweetest cat ever. I like to think that he held on until I was safely ensconsed in Austin. Then he died in peace. And Randy, the roaming neighborhood cat who hung out on my property, was hit by a car in front of my house. It was the first thing I saw when I left home for work. I found her collar and called the owner. hung out by Randy’s side until the owner got there to take her away. It was all so very sad.  I loved Selassie so much, But I knew he was sick so I was always anticipating his death. Randy was somewhat a comfort to me, alleviating my pet loneliness with his daily visits to my yard. Taking naps, chasing field mice. Her death was sudden and heartbreaking. Although I haven’t done so well with the cats this year, it is time to get a cutie kitten to take care of me.
